Image optimization of art & photo files for web or print

Optimizing images for the web results in files that are small in size, acceptable quality and quick loading. Optimizing images for print results in high resolution images that have depth in detail and no jagged edges.

Image file management is the organization of files with the correct settings and format for the intended use in either print, web or presentation. For example, a logo file may need a variety of sizes, color mode, and format for use in print or web. Photographic images require a variety of settings for sizes, color mode, format, and resolution suitable for web or print.

An understanding of the advantages and limitations of each format and how they can work together, is important for quick web load times, eliminating image degradation in print, and avoiding unnecessary large file size in presentations.

Vector vs pixel images
vector vs pixel

What is a vector image? Vector graphics use geometrical points, lines, curves, and shapes based on mathematical equations to represent images in computer graphics.

What is a pixel based image? Pixel-based images are photographic files converted to grids of small rectangular cells (pixels). The smaller and closer together the cells, the better the quality of the image. When a pixel image is enlarged, it can appear grainy (pixellated) because the eye can distinguish individual cells.

An understanding of the advantages and limitations of each format and how they can work together, is important for eliminating and/or resolving image degradation.
